“Life Plan” the future of Senior Housing

A recent article from REALTOR MAGAZINE (a trade publication for Real Estate professionals) details how the changing demographics is affecting housing choices for seniors now and for the future.
According to AARP’s Public Policy Institute, by the year 2030, 37% of the US population will be 65 years or older. What’s more, between now and 2050 the 85+ population is projected to triple while the population younger than 65 will increase by only 12%.
Today many seniors are looking for a “Life Plan” in their housing needs. Decades ago there were few if any senior housing options. Currently senior housing can be categorized as independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing facilities and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs). These CCRCs offer age-in-place combination of all the above and offer seniors a plan for their future. This “Life Plan” is a rebranding that is a positive and empowering description of this housing choice.
Compared to previous generations the Baby Boomers are choosing “senior housing” in all forms at a higher rate. These seniors want safe communities with amenities for activities, learning and socializing. Many are less likely to be truly “retired” and use this time to pursue new adventures, learning and even an encore career.
Downsizing is often a choice over a necessity to many seniors as they opt for less cost and maintenance.
As we see in our own community of SaddleBrooke and SaddleBrooke Ranch the popularity of the Villa (townhouse) as an alternative to single family house.
